'Tis the season for elegant tuxes, fancy dresses, and beautiful corsages. Proms, cotillions, and graduations are rites of passage for teenagers on their journeys into adulthood. But, unfortunately, not all young people will make it.
According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), "traffic crashes are the number one killer of teens, and 28 percent of fatal traffic crashes involving teen drivers are alcohol related." Too often, we hear about these tragic accidents around what should be happy times, like proms and graduation.
So if you're a parent of a teen, what can you do to ensure this happy time stays happy? We found a good resource online from
ADAP of Weston, Inc. (The Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program of Weston, Connecticut). You'll find
the complete article here, which includes tips for parents and tips for teens.
Some of the tips seem simple and straightforward -- like discussing the dangers of drinking and driving with your son or daughter -- but often it's these simple things that make all the difference in the world.
That said, we want to call out one of the items ADAP lists and comment on it: "Discuss travel plans, use a reputable limousine service that will not allow a person to bring, serve or introduce alcohol into the vehicle."
At Accent, we take underage drinking seriously. The goal of our drivers is to ensure your kids get to and from their destination safely, and we do not tolerate underage drinking in our vehicles.
When we first started Accent in 1985 (in an effort to provide safe transportation to those who had been drinking), it was right before prom season. We've been getting kids to and from their proms (and more!) safely for over 25 years.
We, of course, endeavor to deliver this level of service for all "Big Nights Out," including those with adults.
